about
Bill Deal and the Rhondels (Virginia Beach, VA} just knocked me out as a young musician. What a band!!!! Later in my career, I was privileged to play with Ammon Tharp (RIP) and Don Quisenberry...two fine folks and founding members of that band. Don was nice enough to play on this recording with me, along with several other dear friends I've met in my musical life. Special thanks to Mike Edwards (formerly with Steve Wariner, Delbert McClinton and Steve Bassett) for letting me mic up his drum kit in his Williamsburg home. Also to Don's son Lee Quisenberry for his engineering help on this song and a couple of others. He saved the day! Rock out, Virginia!!!!
lyrics
Three hit singles in 69, boy those boys could play
Clean and proud, the band was loud
Working hard every day
They had a big old red-head banging the drums,
Singing soul music so fine
Packing the halls, balls to the walls
Every night was the best of times
Rock out Virginia, in the clubs and on the street
Rock out Virginia, clap your hands and stomp your feet,
Rock out Virginia
Bill Deal playing his keys so fine, smiling at everyone
Quiz was hanging on the bottom, getting heavy lifting done
Horn section blasting out their parts, power to the nth degree
Fat Ammon was singin’and knockin’ it out, that band was just the best to me
Guitar players that could turn your head,
Harmony vocals that would raise the dead
Everybody knew when they were coming to town
No questions asked, they were the best around
Now you might say it was a different day, when nobody knew a thing
Then I’d reply that one can’t deny those fellows could play and sing
Times have changed in this digital world, and a man can’t live in the past
But if their young versions were here right now, I guarantee they would kick your ass!
Rock out, Virginia! Rock out, Virginia!
